BCR Online Workshops for Fall 2009
October 19th, 20th and 21st, 2009; ILLiad Copyright: Issues and Processing; online class; 9-11am each day; $250; 6 hours of CE credit available
Description: Atlas and BCR are teaming up to offer ILLiad Copyright: Issues and Processing. This brand-new three-session online class focuses on interlibrary loan copyright challenges and how to process copyright in the ILLiad system.
Sessions 1 and 2 will survey copyright law briefly, apply copyright law to the interlibrary loan environment and take a quick look at the effect of digital technologies. Session 3 will review the nuts and bolts of processing copyright in the ILLiad system, integration with Copyright Clearance Center and available copyright reports.
Instructors are Heather Clark from BCR and Stephanie Spires from Atlas Systems.

Description: The murky waters of copyright can present navigational challenges for all librarians, and interlibrary loan presents unique issues in this regard. Description: This online workshop will concentrate on the creation of both simple and qualified Dublin Core metadata for digital objects. We will also explore the concept of devising best practices for cataloging, using the Collaborative Digitization Program’s Dublin Core Metadata Best Practices as a guide. Participants will have opportunities to practice with hands-on exercises.

Description: Do you have a major change on the horizon for your staff such as a new software product, staff reorganization or workflow change? There are many things to consider when preparing your staff for these kinds of critical transitions. This Free Friday Forum will review the formal aspects of training development and consider ways to adapt them to your needs. November 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2009; Cataloging Using the OCLC Connexion Client Software; online class; 8-10am each day; $175; 6 hours of CE credit available.
Description: This three-day online course will introduce library staff to OCLC's client interface to the Connexion service and demonstrate how to use it efficiently. Focus will be on using the software for new and copy cataloging and will include how to:
- Apply known search techniques to the new interface.
- Edit existing records to better suit the needs of your library.
- Create new records from scratch or from existing records.
- Export records for use in your own local system.
- Work offline using the software's batch capabilities.
- Create labels using the built-in label program.

November 4th, 2009; WorldCat.org: Web 2.0 Power Tool - Online; online class; 8-10am; $80; 2 hours of CE credit available
Description: Worldcat.org is OCLC’s Web portal to the WorldCat database. It is also a discovery tool for library-owned materials worldwide and a social networking tool for your patrons. This workshop gives an introductory overview to the Worldcat.org platform and demonstrates ways a library can use it to connect to its patrons and its community.

November 10th and 12th, 2009; Understanding the OCLC Authority Record; online class; 8-10am both days; $150; 4 hours of CE credit available
Description: This workshop concentrates on authority records in OCLC - those for personal names, corporate names, geographic names, subjects and titles. We'll discuss the structure of the MARC authority record as it displays in OCLC cataloging interfaces, including many of the fixed field elements.
Looking at the broader picture, we'll talk about the purpose of authority data and how it works with the headings in bibliographic records to improve a catalog's organization and users' ability to navigate through it and find the resources they need and want.

November 18th and 19th, 2009; Using OCLC Authorities with Connexion Client; online class; 8-10am both days; $150; 4 hours of CE credit available
Description: Ensuring that the headings you use in bibliographic records are in their "correct" forms can be time consuming, but necessary to ensure that records group together under the same heading. It's the way to make sure that patrons looking for Beethoven's fifth piano concerto can find all the versions of it in your library, even if some of them have the title "Piano concerto no. 5, op. 73" and others "Emperor Concerto". Authority records from the National Authority File are made available to OCLC cataloging users in the Authorities database, to assist members with authority control - making sure that your bibliographic headings are correct.
This two day workshop focuses on the methods available to search for authority records in OCLC's Connexion client interface as well as the process of controlling headings in OCLC WorldCat bibliographic records.

Description: The functions of the FirstSearch Administrative Module can leverage your investment in your FirstSearch subscription and your visibility on the open web. This workshop will cover the various customization options for the patron interface. Participants will also learn to create links between authorizations, local catalogs, and Open URL services as well as enable deep linking to local catalog records to WorldCat.org. Statistical reports for reference and WorldCat.org will also be covered.

December 2nd, 2009; Empower the Patron: Unmediated Requesting in WorldCat Resource Sharing-Online; online class; 8-10am; $80; 2 hours of CE credit available
Description: The WorldCat Resource Sharing service from OCLC offers features that can improve your staff efficiency. Participants in this workshop will learn how to set up patron-initiated requesting through FirstSearch and create Direct Request profiles to auto-submit requests to lenders without staff intervention.

Description: This live online course provides instruction on copy cataloging using the CatExpress interface. This course covers the copy cataloging workflow including searching, holdings maintenance, exporting and downloading records. After completing this course, the learner will be prepared to fully utilize the CatExpress service.

December 15th and 16th, 2009; Libraries Helping Job Seekers in Hard Times; online class; 11am-1pm both days; $150; 4 hours of CE credit available
Description: In the current economic climate, library resources are being used more than ever, especially by people hunting for work. Libraries are struggling to meet users’ needs for assistance with all aspects of the job hunt, from resume creation to the actual application process. On top of that, library staff must grapple with patrons’ varying skill levels and the additional demands these create for staff.
This online workshop focuses on available resources, many of which are free, to help you help your users. We’ll be discussing ideas for addressing the challenges presented by job seekers and encourage workshop participants to brainstorm strategies for their libraries.

Description: This online workshop provides an intensive introduction in three two-hour sessions to the OCLC MARC bibliographic format. While typically for staff performing original and copy cataloging, this workshop will also help interlibrary loan and reference staff improve their ability to search WorldCat and precisely retrieve the records they need. Participants will learn:
- The structure of the OCLC MARC record
- The coding for the most commonly used fixed field elements and variable fields
- How to access and efficiently use OCLC documentation
